This was my first protest ever. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever have to go to one in my lifetime. I went to show support for the cause because of what happened to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other names that we’ve seen way too many of. These are tragedies that did not have to happen. it’s like, at any given point...it could be me, it could be my family member, it could be my friend, or my associate. Wrong is wrong and I’m tired of seeing it. Law enforcement has become something I always have to keep an eye out for. I might not have the biggest platform but I have people who’ll listen. We have to speak up about these topics, organize in our neighborhoods, and start evolving. We need everyone to wake up and get on the same page. Enough is enough. We have a lot of work to do, and even if we don’t get the results in our lifetime, it’s up to us to take some of the workload off of the next generation.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl who was as black as an oil spill. And when she walked into a room, she took up space. The townspeople were the kind of bright you had to squint your eyes to look at. When they walked into a room, they didn’t take up nearly as much space. They teased and sneered at the dark girl. They talked behind her back. “She’s not beautiful,” they said. The girl felt bad. One day she cried so much that her tears formed a river. Fairy godmother followed the river up, up, up until she reached the girl who was weeping in a garden. “Wow,” said fairy godmother. “Who are you?” The girl was startled. “More importantly, why would you ‘wow’ at me?” The girl picked up another tissue as a new, fat tear rolled down her cheek and dripped into the river. “I’m in awe of your beauty,” said fairy godmother. “What?” cried the girl. “I’m as black as an oil spill. I take up too much space. Who am I to be beautiful?” “Who are you to be beautiful?” said fairy godmother, who wore a crown. “Who are you not to be? You are not as black as an oil spill. You are as black and beautiful as the night sky. Without you, starshine would be meaningless. You take up space because you deserve the attention. People can’t help but to look at you.” Fairy godmother turned to leave back down the river from whence she came. “Wait,” said the girl. “What is your name? Audacity.

I have the audacity to go after my dreams during a global pandemic. The audacity to be attracted to both men and women. The audacity to be black and latinx in a world that has tried to put me in a box. The audacity to be authentically and unapologetically me. The audacity to break generational curses of self destruction, colorism, misguided children and adults trying to find their way. The audacity to change the toxic narrative of women of color being seen as “strong” in ways that are only beneficial to those taking advantage and pushing us over our limits. I have alotta fcking audacity huh...
